Transitioning to agroecological practices is one way to make livestock farming systems stronger and the environment more resilient. These practices influence a whole range of holobionts and interconnected environmental microbiota, from the soil to the end products.

The emergence of multidrug-resistant organisms poses a very real threat to our healthcare system. This phenomenon is mainly caused by the transfer of mobile resistance genes between bacteria.

As the first prebiotic available to newborns, milk oligosaccharides (MOs) play a crucial role in holobiont assembly. More specifically, they regulate gut microbiota composition and modulate the host’s immune response. A study of the MO composition in humans and some animals reveals an array of structures.

Substantial research has sought to leverage microbiota in agriculture to develop sustainable solutions for managing plant health. Studying the levers that can be used to manipulate the plant–microbiota holobiont is a major scientific front.

Ripe grape berries are the primary source of fermentative microorganisms involved in the process by which grape must becomes wine; they also host the pathogens that reduce crop yield and quality. Wine quality is therefore intricately linked to the microbiological status of the grape berries.

With the rise of so-called natural wines, identifying the processes governing spontaneous fermentation has become increasingly important. Understanding the processes that determine microbial transfers in the vineyard and cellar goes beyond simply describing the effects of microbiota composition on winemaking to provide key insights into managing these transfers.

Vaccination is one of the most effective ways to prevent infectious disease in livestock. However, genetic variations and variations in the gut microbiota can affect vaccine response effectiveness.

Gut issues in livestock that are frequently observed after weaning lead to the use of treatments that contribute to the emergence of antibiotic-resistant bacteria.

Infectious respiratory diseases are a major challenge for the livestock industry. They have an impact on animal health and welfare, the environment and public health.
The gastrointestinal tract is a reservoir for opportunistic pathogenic agents, or pathobionts, which benefit from an imbalance of the gut microbiota (dysbiosis) to proliferate in predisposed patients. Vancomycin-resistant enterococci (VRE) arise from the gastrointestinal tract where their proliferation precedes their dissemination via the blood and lymphatic circulation and then infection.
